Kuwaiti Gahwa and Dates
Introduction
Kuwaiti Gahwa, a traditional Arabic coffee, is a staple in Kuwaiti hospitality, often paired with dates to create a perfect balance of bitter and sweet flavors. This aromatic beverage is infused with cardamom and sometimes saffron, offering a unique taste that reflects the rich culture of Kuwait.
Ingredients
For Kuwaiti Gahwa:
- 2 cups water
- 2 tablespoons lightly roasted Arabic coffee grounds
- 4-5 cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 1/2 teaspoon saffron threads (optional)
- Sugar, to taste (optional)
For Serving:
- Fresh dates (such as Khudri or Sukkari)
Instructions
Preparing the Gahwa:
- Bring water to a boil in a dallah (traditional Arabic coffee pot) or a small saucepan.
- Add the coffee grounds and reduce heat to a simmer for 5 minutes.
- Stir in the crushed cardamom pods and saffron (if using). Simmer for another 2-3 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let it steep for 2 minutes.
- Strain the coffee into a thermos or another serving pot.
- Sweeten with sugar if desired, though traditionally it is served unsweetened.
Serving:
- Pour the Gahwa into small Arabic coffee cups (finjaan).
- Arrange fresh dates on a plate alongside the coffee.
- Serve immediately, allowing guests to enjoy the contrast of the bitter coffee with the sweet dates.
Tips
- For an authentic touch, use a dallah and serve the coffee in ornate cups.
