Vegetarian Baked Ziti
Ingredients
- 12 oz ziti pasta
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (24 oz) jar marinara sauce
- 1 (15 oz) container ricotta cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Cook the Pasta
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Cook the ziti pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Step 2: Sauté the Vegetables
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent (about 5 minutes). Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Step 3: Combine Ingredients
Stir in the marinara sauce, ricotta cheese, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix well, then gently fold in the cooked ziti pasta until fully coated.
Step 4: Layer and Bake
Transfer half of the pasta mixture to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with half the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. Add the remaining pasta mixture, then top with the rest of the cheeses.
Step 5: Finish and Serve
Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
Tips
For a richer flavor, add sautéed mushrooms or spinach to the sauce mixture. You can also substitute cottage cheese for ricotta if preferred.
