Vegetarian Onion Rings
Ingredients
- 2 large onions (sweet or yellow)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk (or plant-based alternative for vegan option)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (or panko for extra crispiness)
- ½ cup cornmeal (optional for extra crunch)
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Onions
Peel the onions and slice them into ½-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set aside.
Step 2: Create the Dredging Stations
In one bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, pour the buttermilk. In a third bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and cornmeal (if using).
Step 3: Coat the Onion Rings
Dip each onion ring into the flour mixture, then into the buttermilk, and finally into the breadcrumb mixture, ensuring an even coating. Place the coated rings on a plate.
Step 4: Fry the Onion Rings
Heat oil in a deep frying pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry the onion rings in batches for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
Step 5: Serve
Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ketchup, ranch, or a spicy aioli.
Tips:
- For extra crispiness, double-coat the onion rings by repeating the buttermilk and breadcrumb steps.
- Baking option: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and bake for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway.
